About the academy program
Introduction:
GTSSF is making in-week training available to athletes in competitive programs by coordinating athletes’ school schedules for early release to accommodate additional afternoon training time.
Eligibility/Requirements:
Logistics of Programming:
On-Snow - There is a 4 athlete minimum for each program to run. If athletes do not meet the academic standards, they are expected to be doing school work during training time rather than on-snow until those requirements are met. This will be assessed on a case by case basis. Transportation: A GTSSF van will likely be headed to the resort each day of in-week training. However, this will likely not be able to accommodate everyone. We encourage athletes who have their own transportation to drive to the resort and carpool, so long as all parties are comfortable with those arrangements. GTSSF will continue to pursue other solutions for transportation.
Academics (for public school participants) - The public high school is on an alternating A, B scheduling pattern with classes 1, 2, 3, and 4 taken on one day and classes 5, 6, 7, and 8 taken on the other.
For cross country athletes, it is recommended to clear the last class of each day (4 & 8) for early release. This means two classes each semester, four in total, would need to be supplemented by online schooling or summer school.
For athletes who train at the resort, it is recommended to clear the last two classes of each day (3, 4, 7, & 8) for early release. This means four classes each semester, eight in total, would need to be supplemented by online schooling or summer school.
A sample schedule provided by Teton High School can be found here. This was created with a resort based athlete in mind. It is only a sample. Schedules may vary by student.
Online classes will be coordinated through the high school using the IDLA system. In your meeting with a counselor, they will walk you through registration dates and how the system works. IDLA classes cost $75 each.
GTSSF is investigating avenues for providing tutoring and/or additional classroom time for all athletes during and after training to help with each athlete’s academic success as needed.
Questions: Any and all questions can be directed to executive director, Bridget Baumeister, at bridget@tvsef.org or by calling the office 208-354-4878.
