PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Cross Country Ski Development Team athletes will learn skate and classic techniques through practice and games with an introduction to basic training and conditioning to increase stamina and strength. With an emphasis is on outdoor recreation and an introduction to competition, skiers will develop cross country skiing skills to maximize individual athletic potential. Skiers will experience different types of terrain and snow conditions throughout the season.
Ages: 7 – 10 years (2nd – 5th grade)
Skill Development Focus: Emphasis will be on teamwork and fair play to learn good body position, balance and weight shift while skiing in all terrain and under a variety of conditions.
Skill Requirements: Basic cross country ski fundamentals. Willingness and a commitment to try.
Competition: Introduction to competition. Teton Ridge Classic, Alta Vista and Youth Festival highly recommended. Skiers are encouraged to race in local events. Age appropriate distances.
Schedule/Sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays for 14 weeks, December 6, 2022 – March 9, 2023 at Alta Track, 4-5 pm. Starting in February, when there is more daylight, practices will be 4-5:15pm.
*If groomed track is not available on Dec 6th due to snow conditions, practices will be once a week and varied until groomed track/on snow activities are available.

GTSSF Team Meeting: November 12, 2022, 9-11am, mandatory, location TBD
Complementary Programs: As a cross country devo athlete, your schedule would allow you to register for these other GTSSF programs:
Ski Passes: $25 TVTAP Nordic Membership is required.
Transportation: Not provided.

Work Deposit and Family Participation: $150 - One deposit required per family. Positive parental support is essential. Families are encouraged to get involved with club activities. Deposit is credited at end of year if volunteer hours are fulfilled.

- One or two days of alpine devo (Saturdays or Sundays) - for intermediate downhill skiers
- One or two days of freeride (Saturdays and/or Sundays) - for more advanced downhill skiers
- Snowboard devo (Sundays) - for developing riders
- Snowboard comp - 1 Day or 2 Day (Saturdays, can add on Sundays) - for more advanced riders

- Skis: About the height of the athlete. To be properly waxed by the athlete, parent or club leader for every day of skiing.
- Boots: allow for natural ankle movement
- Poles: Chin to nose height
- Wax: recommended that athletes purchase their own wax kit, coaches can advise on what items are needed and usage
- Skis: About the height of the athlete to 10cm taller; can have fishscales or waxable skis that are to be properly waxed by the athlete, parent or club leader for every day of skiing.
- Boots: allow for natural ankle movement
- Poles: Armpit to shoulder height.
- Wax: recommended that athletes purchase their own wax kit, coaches can advise on what items are needed and usage
- One pair of skis, boots, and poles (shoulder to chin height) can be used for both techniques. Skis will need extra attention to be sure they are waxed properly for each practice.
