PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Prep Cross Country Ski Team athletes should have at least two years of cross country skiing experience and ski 2-6 days a week or as much as is enjoyable. Emphasis is on outdoor recreation and an increase in competition. Coaches will provide opportunities for skiers to experience different types of terrain and snow conditions. Focus is on suppleness, technique and speed and an introduction to stamina and strength. Skiers will be able to demonstrate basic athletic stance on skis, balance on one ski while skiing gradual downhills and understand the difference between running, classic skiing and skating. Can herringbone and snowplow. Goal is to develop skiing skills to maximize individual athletic potential. Introduction of Skate and Classic technique and basic training and conditioning.
Ages: 11-13 years (6th – 8th grade)
Skill Development Focus: Emphasis will be on good body position, balance and weight shift through play. Maintain appropriate balance and stance while skiing in all terrain and under a variety of conditions. Focus on team work and fair play.
Skill Requirements: Basic cross country ski fundamentals and good conditioning.
Competition: Encouraged to race in local events, interclub comps that may lead to state and divisional races including Junior National Qualifier (JNQ). Age appropriate distances.
Schedule/Sessions: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for 16 weeks, Nov. 28, 2022 – March 17, 2023.
Program Fees:
GTSSF Team Meeting: November 12, 2022, 9-11am, mandatory, location TBD
Academy Program*: This program offers the potential for extended training days for athletes who can coordinate their school schedules to get out of school early. For cross country, this would mean an additional fee of $165 for each additional extended training day an athlete signs up for the entire season i.e. all Tuesdays = $165 for the season.
At registration, you will need to register for each day separately. For example, if you want to register for Tuesdays and Thursdays, you will need to first register for Tuesdays and then go back in and add a Thursday registration.
*Schedules will be decided by coaches. Extended days are being offered Wednesdays and Fridays from 2pm-5pm.
Complementary Programs: As a cross country prep athlete, your schedule would allow you to register for these other GTSSF programs:
Ski Passes: TVTAP Nordic Membership is required. Grand Targhee Nordic pass encouraged.
Transportation: GTSSF vans will be available for the 2022-23 season. Shuttles will be coordinated by coaches, office staff, and parents based on where athletes attend school and the needs of other teams. Transportation is never 100% guaranteed.

License: None for local races. USSA Competitors license required for JNQ races for athletes 13+, $125
Race Travel Expenses: Not included in program fees. See Parent Handbook for more information on competition fees.
Work Deposit and Family Participation: $150 - One deposit required per family. Positive parental support is essential. Families are encouraged to get involved with club activities. Deposit is credited at end of year if volunteer hours are fulfilled.

- Optional - Dryland Training - $250 fee, 8-week preseason dryland training. Includes 2 days of strength training and 2 days of roller skiing each week, September 19-November 18, 2022. Can sign up during registration.

- Freeride - 1 day or 2 day (Saturdays and Sundays)
- Snowboard comp - 1 day or 2 day (Saturdays and add on Sundays)
